R: Career Update + Geek Out Session

Am most probably going to slowdown from wedding photography for a few months. After my dear friend Crystal’s wedding this saturday, it will be the mark of the 10th wedding I’d shot.

It has been a great big 10 personally. Learnt and experienced so so so much. I will never give the experience of shooting those 10 weddings in exchange for anything. They were some of the best hours of my life. This is something that I could really wake up everyday and do.

Yet, I realized I’ve reached a limit in terms of the on day wedding photos I shoot. Reasons? I have to say camera gear.

The Pentax k100d is a great great camera. But the autofocus speed and accuracy is terrible. With canon or Nikon, the AF just snaps unto the subject, with pentax, it takes awhile and worst still, its not accurate. I was so so so hopping to the extent it feels like you were hoping that your GF weren’t cheating on you kind of thing, that they would fix the AF in the new k20d but no, they didn’t =.=

So am planning to save up to RM20k to upgrade the system. Gears I’d be getting with rough estimated pricing is:

1) canon 40d - 3.8k
2) 580ex II flash - 1.5k
3) 18-55 f2.8 IS - 3.6k
4) 50-200 f2.8 is - 6k
5) 85mm f1.8 - 1.4k
6) battery grip - 0.6k
7) others -0.5k

Actually I can skip number four for now and limit myself to non Church weddings. So actually, I just need about RM10k to continue my work in a next level kind. Hmm, just got that realization now. Heh. Okay scrap RM20k idea.

Anyhow, whilst waiting for the RM10K mark, am going to start learning about strobing and off camera flash system. Meaning you trigger your flash wirelessly. So to do so, a few stuff coming in are:

1) 2 light stands
2) umbrella adapters
3) umbrella reflectors
4) V2s wireless receiver
5) vivitar 283HV manual flash

Got 1) and 2), 3) would be getting next week and 4)/5) should be arriving from hong kong in 2 weeks time.

How about the 77mm F1.8 Limited instead of the 85mm F1.8? That's a real beauty.

There's no 50-200mm F2.8 IS. What about the Pentax 50-135mm F2.8, or the Sigma 50-150mm F2.8? Sigma finally put all their good new stuff for A-mount and K-mount.

The K10D/K20D should have proper wireless TTL (unlike the K100D) so an extra 540FGZ should be great. Usually in studio setups you can afford to have one 'weaker' flash.

And we can't say for sure if the K20D has AF improvements or not. Only when it's out will we know! (Like the Sony A200, supposed to be 1 stop better than the A100 but is more like 2 stops better like the A700 in tests.)

hey albert :)

i love the pentax primes and everything with it.. but the AF too slow and fiddly ler.. :S

ah, yes, its great to see sigma and tamron putting all their good stuff for sony and pentax mounts. :D

whoah, 2 stops better? thats awesome..

i was tempted for a sony, but i can't afford the lenses i want relative to the canon mounts i want, correct me if im wrong?

Supposing you'd go for the equivalents:
1) Sony A700 - RM4400
2) Sony HVL-F56AM - RM1200
3) Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 - RM1300
4a) Sigma 50-150mm F2.8 - RM2800 OR...
4b) Tamron 70-200mm F2.8 - RM2500
5) Carl Zeiss 85mm F1.4 - RM4900
6) Sony VG-C70AM portrait grip - RM800
7) Extra Sony NP-FM500H battery to put in grip - RM300

Total = RM14,600 or RM14,300 (if option #4b but I personally prefer #4a for APS-C sensors because it is half the weight)

Your Canon total is RM16,900 without the "others" bit.
